Interview with White Life
- by Dawn Reed
We wanted to find out more about the awesome electronic pop project from Baltimore, White Life, who killed it on our recent Band of the Month poll. So we caught up with lead Life-r Jon Ehrens, who spills it on the meaning behind the band's name, limitless influence, and future plans.
Deli: How did the band start?
Jon: I have a habit of making new bands, and this one was planned as an electronically arranged project, that one could dance to.
Where did the band name come from?
Came from when my conscious brain heard something interesting coming from my unconscious brain. I think it had something to do with my childhood inability to think in the abstract, and when people talked about "life," I had an image of a white Light Bright bulb.
What are your biggest musical influences?
Everything I've ever heard. To select influences is limiting, and to let yourself create without specific guidepost allows you to delve into the darkest part of your creative self.
What artists (local, national and/or international) are you currently listening to?
Other Colors, Katy Perry, Peaking Lights, DJ Nate, DJ Dog Dick, Rick Ross, Robyn, Owen Gardner, Rhianna, Ami Dang, Johnny Blaze, Sun O))), Chic, Washed Out, Adventure, Schwarz, Future Islands, Grass Widow, Boy Meets Girl, The Toms, Wye Oak, David Quinton, Pole, Shoes, Comeback Ranch, Holy Ghost Party, Needle Gun, Margo Guryan, Felt, The Agrarians, Michael Jackson, Dam Funk, Biggy and Beefheart,
What's the first concert that you ever attended and first album that you ever bought?
First Concert was The Beach Boys on the Kokomo tour at Wolf Trap. First Album was probably one of the Wierd Al's. I also remembering buying the Mr Big album.
What do you love about DC/Balitmore's music scene?
Hm two different scenes! But I think the thing I love is when the people play music and I get to drink.
What would you like to see change in the local music scene?
People embracing who they really are, and not who they are at work.
What are your plans for the upcoming year?
Write a #1 hit song.
What was your most memorable live show?
I played a show in college when someone flagged me!
Is there someone who has helped your band grow through support?
My brother-in-law Joe Hainline has been incredible with promoting this project! He does all of the Tweeting and most of the Facebookery and pro-bono (bro-bono? bro-brono?) Also Dr Mostofsky and Jen at Ehse are much supportive,
Is there a piece of equipment you couldn't live without and why?
Honestly,no! Never been a gear-head. ______________________________________________________ White Life S/T album, released 5/30, is available here.
