Creepoid

Weekend Warrior, February 16 - 18

I was asked to write this week’s Weekend Warrior because there are few (if any) Philly bands that I have come to know better than Creepoid. In a way, this Saturday feels like I’m about to attend the funeral of old friends whom I’ve grown up with, which is actually kind of true. I remember first discovering the band in my earliest days of writing for The Deli Philly. I became enamored with their first single, “Pink Tag Sale,” which I discovered while searching for new music on MySpace. (Lol…does anybody else remember those days?) We eventually met at a show in South Philly, and bonded over our love of consuming weed and alcohol, which I’m sure is a common connection that they have with many folks. However, what really kept me coming back to their shows were their beautiful melodies and explosive jams, as well as the air of unpredictability that always seemed to surround them.

Case in point – the grunge-psych quartet of Sean Miller, Anna Troxell, Pat Troxell, and PeteJoe Urban had just sold out their release show for the Horse Heaven LP at Kung Fu Necktie. There was a sense of something special building that evening. Well, at the band’s very next show a week after, I attended another packed performance at Tritone, a defunct music venue that used to inhabit where The Cambridge now stands, across the street from beloved Philly institution Bob & Barbara’s. Things were certainly chaotic that evening and not quite going the band’s way. We were all having fun before their set, and probably got a bit too lit – some more than others (PeteJoe ;-). Long story short – the band ended up imploding on stage, which nearly ensued into an all-out brawl amongst themselves. I remember leaving that show thinking: “Shit – I just watched the end of Creepoid.” I texted Pat the next morning to see if that was true. They were all hungover at breakfast, laughing about what had happened the night before.

Ha…I guess, in a way, it’s been fortunate that the band has lasted this long, and I am thankful that it has. This Saturday at Union Transfer will surely be bittersweet, but I’m certainly looking forward to seeing old friends, familiar faces, and a kick-ass Creepoid show for one last time. Hope to see you there as well. And of course, #BringWeed! – Q.D. Tran

Weekend Warrior, March 10 - 12

As one descends into subterranean cement-lined confines of Underground Arts this evening, a cavalcade of the city’s heavy-psych noisemakers will meet you on the inside. Cultivating a cozy temperamental air gently permeating the auditory system with hazy melodies before escalating into the ethereal, Creepoid delivers the calm and then the searing storm.  Speaking of sear, Purling Hiss pummels and rips through a fog-filtered, psych lens, delivering raunchy riffs among unrestrained rhythms. Meanwhile, with their new album, Pleasure Suck, due out in two weeks via Tiny Engines, the disorienting but enchanting surge of The Spirit of the Beehive will be on display. Likewise, the “raw rock fury” of Ecstatic Vision, whose aptly titled forthcoming album of the same name, will be available next month via Relapse, torching a menacing mesmerizing hole in the mind in the process.

For those seeking other accommodations, the bombarding, brutal, soul-crushing stomp of Pissed Jeans will celebrate their new album, Why Love Now (Sub Pop), with a pair of sold-out release shows Friday and Saturday at Boot & Saddle and PhilaMOCA respectively.
