GABI is an artist that can be easily described with a quick descriptor, but it takes dedication to her music to fully appreciate how evocative and moving her compositions can be. While the “opera pop” tag on her Bandcamp page sufficiently describes her sound, taking the time to hear how this translates into a three-minute song can be infinitely rewarding, and her latest single “Sleep” highlights the simple grandeur of that experience. Utilizing relatively barebones instrumentation, including fragile synths, harps, clarinets and pianos, the track builds upon loops that evolve into almost celestial revolutions, like GABI is creating the universe by having the production orbit her masterful and heavenly voice. And instead of ending with a crescendo, the song simply fades once its reached its apex, concluding like a storm finally letting up. After a super successful first night, and an allstar line-up, Deli NYC sponsored event The Hum returns for its second week at beautifully intimate Greenpoint venue Manhattan Inn. For those just tuning in now, the month-long residency, presented by Hypnocraft, is aimed at spotlighting female musicians across a wide variety of genres, and inspires unexpected collaborations. Monday night's line up promises to be atmospheric and experimental, including musicians from Space Captain, Iris Lune, and MADEIRA. The San Francisco based electro pop band, Starlight Kid will be performing Friday night at DNA Lounge, along with the local Emily Whitehurst fronted band, Survival Guide. Make sure you head out and support local artists!

Both ensembles will be supporting the Brooklyn based experimental songstress, GABI:

"Gabrielle Herbst's experiences writing for chamber orchestra and experiments in mixed instrumentation inspired her to develop a repertoire of short-form, vocal-centric compositions under the name Gabi. These solitary explorations in early 2013 with dual-track loop pedals led to the nine songs which composed the album, "Sympathy". Embracing the vast potential of the human voice as instrument, story and landscape, these open-ended sessions yielded a suite of compositions that captured Herbst's personal metamorphosis into Gabi. Which rendered past influences and new collaborations into a personal statement on the desire for human connectivity and emotional catharsis via an intimate exploration along the edges of common songwriting."

Marrying ethereal vocal arrangements with classical and ambient influences, and relying on a drumless soundscape where the only rhythm is created by vocal loops and the occasional piano chord, Brooklyn artist GABI has created with "Sympathy"  a record of rare intensity and beauty. The album release will be celebrated tonight (04.22) with a show at the Le Poisson Rouge.

Recently signed to Daniel Lopatin (aka Oneohtrix Point Never)'s record label Software, Bushwick's Gabi belongs to a growing wave of artists (for unknown reason mostly female) who choose to rely almost exclusively on vocals for their songs' arrangements, relying on the help of looping devices. Gabi's single/video 'Koo Koo' (streaming) has an ascetic, almost new wave-ish quality to it. You can see how she pull this off live at Baby's All Right on October 2nd.
