lowercase roses

Weekend Warrior, February 2 - 4

The clarity that often accompanies consuming, clean, cold air hangs in the isolated, fuzzy folk-pop of Matt Scheuermann, a.k.a. Lowercase Roses. His latest release, Surgical Pop, stitches together precise melodies within intimate lyrics. Delicate, revealing storylines are juxtaposed by the harsher instrumental friction of the outside world. Channeling the nostalgia of youth seen through the wisdom of experience, Cherry captures a universal memory, igniting a flashback fuse and (at times) simmering in a gentle sway. Performing solo this Saturday, Mimi Gallagher (Nona, Year Of Glad, Eight) will craft catchy, grungy, pop-punk. With their forthcoming album Reveries (due out February 23 via Egghunt Records), the brutal beauty of Delaware garage rock trio Grace Vonderkuhn rounds out this Everybody Hits lineup. New Lowercase Rose Album Available for Streaming & Purchase

Lowercase Roses, a.k.a. Matt Scheuermann, has released a new album. Surgical Pop injects ferocity into the bedroom-folk, lamplit shadows. Juxtaposing an assertive gritty aggression against a serenading twinkle, the album ebbs and flows, catching one off guard in a surprisingly positive manner. From moments of pared-down beauty to jarring jangle, the record, whose proceeds go to the Attic Youth Center, operates with care.

Weekend Warrior, May 20 - 22

Tonight at Everybody Hits is the long-awaited release show for Thin Lips’ debut LP Riff Hard, coming out via local tastemakers Lame-O Records. Thin Lips are a venerable supergroup of longstanding Philly stalwarts who have hit a sweet spot of triumphant pop rock and confessional, introspective lyrics without sentimentality. Chrissy Tashjian, formerly of Dangerous Ponies and The Bee Team, captains this ship with her commanding, casual, and versatile vocals. The hard riffs are largely courtesy of longtime bandmate Kyle Pulley (ex-Dangerous Ponies) and Chris Diehm, a punk-rock lifer who cut his teeth in Lancaster’s 1994! before coming to Philly and lending his talents to Thin Lips, as well as Year Of Glad. The band is filled out by Mikey Tashjian (The Superweaks, ex-Dangerous Ponies), who shows his ability to shift rhythms and help craft intriguing songs, while maintaining a not-too-serious rock 'n' roll sheen. Celebrating with the Lips will be Casey Magic, Lame-O labelmates Lowercase Roses, folky psych rockers Pine Barons, and Pure Pop, a “new pop-punk trio comprised of Lame-O, Superweaks, and Modern Baseball angel babies.” Everybody Hits, 529 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $5-$10, All Ages - Adam G.

Lowercase Roses Vinyl Release Show at Everybody Hits Aug. 21

Matt Scheuermann, formerly of The Sidekicks, started a solo project, recording under the moniker roses, which he recently altered to Lowercase Roses to avoid any confusion with the multiple projects already using the former name. Scheuermann shared a three-song EP towards the end of last year that found him journeying far from the sound of his previous band to an isolated place filled with warm, acoustic strums and his genteel, heartwarming vocals. This evening at Everybody Hits, his self-titled EP will be getting an official release on 7” vinyl via Lame-O/Stereophonodon Records. Joining in the celebration will be August Koch (of Cayetana), Thin Lips, and Cherry. Everybody Hits, 529 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $5, All Ages - H.M. Kauffman
