A new year represents aesthetically a clean slate, the chance to turn the page and let the past whether, recent or not, behind. Of course, the past may also hold cherished memories that one wishes to carry into the future. Either way, Saturday night serves as an opportunity to celebrate, for some, the year that was and for others the year that one hopes 2017 will be.

Now, my first instinct when I enter any environment is to look and listen; if there’s music, that’s typically a solid forecaster of good fortune. With that criteria, here are a few places one should consider spending the last hours of a trying 2016.

The high-octane ragged barrelhouse blues of TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb will be headlining Boot & Saddle, paired with the earnest Americana of Levee Drivers, and the playfully bizarre, eclectic Mercury Radio Theater. If funky R&B and soul are your aspirations, Underground Arts is the destination. The brass beacon of Balkan beats, known as West Philadelphia Orchestra, and the retrograde soul-funk engine of Johnny Showcase once again come together for sweaty, good time. And channeling the silky authoritative dance-inducing vibes of Byrne & Bowie, MINKA enters the fray, which also starts with the funky instrumental slices of Muscle Tough.

The spellbinding folk-psych of Kurt Vile brings his mellow/mercury-spiking spectrum to The Fillmore, where he’ll be joined by psych-folk outfit Woods and Nathan Bowles. Ortlieb’s will host the mobile-layered, grooving, melodic sojourn of Mo Lowda & The Humble, as well as the atmosphere-altering, future-traversing experimentation of Air is Human, and a DJ set from Suburban Living, who will be pulling double duty that evening performing at Franklin Hall with Vacationer and CRUISR. BTW: Speaking of DJ sets, Lushlife will also be occupying the decks at Johnny Brenda’s.

Free Download: "No One Stops" - The Humble

Well, it looks like Mo Lowda & the Humble have shortened their name to simply The Humble. They also have a new album, titled Act Accordingly, coming out on March 11. It's the trio's first record in over two years. You can take a listen and download for free below the album's first single, "No One Stops." The Humble will be heading out on tour for most of February in support of Act Accordingly, and will be back home for its release show on Sunday, February 21 at The Foundry with Commonwealth Choir and Pine Barons. Let's develop a groove. Letting the bass bob, the drums snap their way back in line, and the guitar picks its place to drift in, all the while the vocals encompass that soulful personal funk. Now, submerge yourself in that groove allowing it to evolve and roll with the tide. Immerse yourself in the flowing tunes of Mo Lowda & The Humble opening this evening for Rusted Root at Ardmore Music Hall. This trio has a well-hone grasp of what locking in means, and while it's easy to let that sound melodically wash over you, stay alert because that relaxed, subconscious sway has an underling power, which boils below the surface only to reveal itself when the group inevitably turns up the heat. Weekend Warrior, October 31 - November 2

Grand masters of Halloween ceremonies TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb return to Underground Arts to host their fifth annual Rock and Roll Murdershow tonight. But unlike The Revenge of Michael Myers or the Dream Child, this ghoulish sequel is set to deliver thrills and chills for all the right reasons. This edition will feature 8 great bands taking over 2 stages. With an opening murdershow performance that consists of the only orchestra to be fronted by a theremin virtuoso, The Divine Hand Ensemble will be conjuring up a set of horror movie classics. Mumblr will be making a triumphant return from tour, which was in support of their debut full-length album Full of Snakes, and Tutlie will be revitalized with its latest incarnation. Lantern's amped-up, guitar-fueled performance will likely reveal some new tracks from the recording session that they had over the summer. And Mo Lowda & the Humble are set to throwdown what is slated to be their last Philly show of the year. Rounding out this phantasmagorical lineup will be Northern Arms and the Bernhardt Family Band.
