Weekend Warrior, June 23 - 25

After a pressure cooker of a week, this weekend offers the opportunity to let out some steam, ease the tension, and let loose. This evening, Cheerleader heads the billing at Johnny Brenda’s. The quintet’s misty, refreshing melodies wash over you in a pleasantly cruising daydream. An inherent, rolling, rhythmic optimism sticks into the grooves, escaping the day-to-day grind. Tonight, they’ll be supported by Buffalo garage-rock trio Made Violent and the Brooks Brothers-led musical ensemble of Louds, whose bright, bubbling pop-rock naturally spills over on to the dance floor.

On Saturday at Johnny Brenda's, the quirky sing-along, carnival, musical troupe of OhBree brings out all the bells and whistles, celebrating their new record Burn Bridges, Burn Pies. Orchestrating their precision-oriented, multi-faceted soundscapes, Grandchildren helps in setting the musical scene, along with the engaging, energy-rich ebb & flow of Mumblr and the subdued pop of Glenn Matthews.

And whether you simply aren’t ready for the party to end or are an early riser ready for some Sunday day-drinking, get on over to The Barbary for the first annual Psychedelic Breakfast with psych-garage trio Residuels, local grindcore three-piece Die Choking, An Albatross, and much more. - Michael Colavita

New OhBree LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

OhBree recently released their new LP Burn Bridges, Burn Pies. The collective of troubadours finds an intriguing balance, as personal narratives meet eccentric ends. Strolling the brass horn-blasting, boarded streets, the band finds a delightful medium between playful melody and frenetic force. You can catch their record release show on Saturday, June 24 at Johnny Brenda’s, where they'll be supported by Grandchildren, Mumblr, and Glenn Matthews.

Weekend Warrior, April 21 - 23

Rowdy, restless, riff-charged Dark Web tied us in with their self-titled album (The Deli Philly’s April Record of the Month). This Saturday, their nonstop sewer punk sounds serve as the primer for a Record Store Day lineup at Repo Records that doesn’t quit. The stampeding, snarling, punk anthems of Posers enter the fray, while a fire-breathing, raw-rock fury explodes from the down and dirty exploits of Residuels. The murky, mystic, synth-laced, darkwave of Remote Control will dial you in, and sticky, psych grooves and sweltering exploratory guitar runs set off the closing solo set from Purling Hiss

As the day dwindles down, Eris Temple Arts will host the release show for chamber-folk ensemble On the Water’s new EP Superposition. Whether dashing forward in exuberant rock or swaying in reflective melodies, Dominic resonates. Potentially showcasing material from their forthcoming album Burn Bridges, Burn Pies, the Mad-Hattered, quirky concoctions of OhBree is on the slate, as are the adventurous-eclectic instrumentation merged with captivating songwriting of Dear Rabbit. The duo of Baby & Shylow, which features Aleks Martray (Grandchildren), kicks off the proceedings. - Michael Colavita

New Track: "Tiny Tethers" - OhBree

Exuberant, oddball troupe OhBree will release their forthcoming album, Burn Bridges, Burn Pies, on May 19. “Tiny Tethers” serves as our first look behind the musical curtain. Kicked into drive by omnipresent keys, the song flows as feverish horn blasts pop around twists of harmony-backed flashes of tongue-twisting lyrics. It’s a playful carnival of sound that brightens one’s day. You can catch OhBree as part of On The Water’s EP release show this Saturday, April 22 at Eris Temple Arts, with Dominic, Dear Rabbit, and Baby & Shylow. (Photo by Emily Dubin)

New OhBree EP Available for Streaming & Download

Drinking from the waters of homegrown acts like Man Man and The Extraordinaires, OhBree continue down their strange, twisted musical journey with the release of Feed Me Poison. The eight-piece traveling circus revels in the theatrics that accompany its music. The group happily honors the tradition of keeping Philly weird. (Photo by Emily Dubin)
