The 7 Best Electronic Records of 2017 by Emerging NYC Artists

With an appreciation for the jubilance of pop music and the willingness to explore new sounds that NYC is known for, in 2014 the city’s electronic musicians created music that could soundtrack all-night dance parties or pensive nights alone. Beshken captured that contrast best on For Time Is The Longest Distance Between Two People. The album migrates between spacious, simmering instrumental sections and buoyant, pulsing rave-ups. Overcoats played more heavily on thumping, dance-floor anthems with their debut album YOUNG, but lyrically the duo looked further than the party scene. Overcoats’ portrait of inner emotional struggles rivals the tact of many veteran pop songwriters. The electronic genre also took influence from the indie rock world. Guerilla Toss, featured on our cover this past fall, released GT Ultra, a mish-mash of post-punk, psychedelia, and electronica that’s near impossible to accurately categorize. Covering stuttering electronica in a dream pop-inspired haze, Blood CulturesHappy Birthday balanced the danceable with the moody. Perhaps not quite fitting into the electronic realm, Sneaks made a post-punky sophomore album using almost only a drum machine, bass guitar, and vocals to craft the expertly concise and individual It’s a Myth. To be fair, that album came out before Sneak’s Eva Moolchan moved to NYC, but since the band’s relocation we’ve proudly embraced them as our own. Belonging to the Electronic realm are also two NYC records we recently blogged about: Torres' dark and mysterious Three Futures and Standing on the Corner's avant-hip hop masterpiece, and recent Deli NYC Record of the Month, Red Burns. - Cameron Carr





New(YC) Releases: O Mer, Overcoats, The Everymen, VÉRITÉ

Here's our usual appointment with new tracks released by NYC area artists that are a little more than just "emerging." This week we have soul pop duo Overcoats, Israeli electronic musician O Mer (pictured), electro pop diva VÉRITÉ, and New Jersey's Pop and Rollers The Everymen.





Buzz alert: Overcoats perform live for NPR + play Fat Baby on 03.03

In their latest single 'Nighttime Hunger,' Overcoats take a simple expression of longing, 'when the darkness comes,' and twist the suggestive phrase around until it turns itself into a mantra of foreboding and threat. Laid over sinuous beats and rapturous harmonies. It's a strong debut from duo Hana and JJ, who only just released their self-titled debut EP last summer and are already playing dates alongside musicians like James Blake and Hozier - and performing live for NPR. Hear the song below and see them when they play at Fat Baby on Thursday, March 3rd. -

Electro-soul duo Overcoats plays Pianos tomorrow (11.14)

Tomorrow night (11.14) NYC's Overcoats will be bringing their mellow electro-soul music to NYC's lower east side. Although only comprised of two musicians, Hana Ellon and JJ Mitchell, the band offers music that's diverse and multi-layered. Their voices, confident and seducing, bring to mind Lucius' amazing harmonizing, and rise above the electronic instrumental base present throughout most of their self-titled EP. Single “The Fog” (streaming) begins sparsely, with pulsating vocal harmonies and a percussive loop, but as the two sing “Freedom is when I’m without you,” a drum thud and simple electric piano chords set the stage for some beautiful vocal arrangements. Definitely a band to keep an ear on, you can see them at Pianos tomorrow night. - Isabel Rolston
