PC Worship

Keep NYC insane! Guerilla Toss, PC Worship and Palberta play Palisades on 06.04

We believe the health of a musical scene can be measured by the amount of bands that are completely out of their mind, and also by the amount of music fans interested in attending their shows. In this regard, there's a quality gig at Palisades in about a month (Saturday June 4th) that shines a bright, although rather psychotic, light on NYC, involving two local bands that sound nothing short of irrational (Palberta - pictured - and Guerilla Toss) and one coming across as "seriously disturbed" (PC Worship). Taking inspiration from subversive movements like No Wave and early Post Punk, without sounding simply amateurish (that's the hard part!), these groups represent NYC's current sound of "uncompromise" - and the sparkle that keeps the Rock'n'Roll flame alive in this problematic and increasingly art-hostile city.

Market Hotel returns with edgy DIY bill on 01.23: Guerrilla Toss, PC Worship, Pill

Well, in case anybody doubted it, the Brooklyn DIY movement is alive an well, and the news of the reopening of Market Hotel hopefully will allow it to flourish for many more years. The Bushwick venue that became somewhat legendary in the late aughts under Todd P's curatorial activity (and which we partly captured in this 2008 Deli NYC cover of Crystal Stilts playing a show there), will reopen its doors on January 22 with a two day party. The second night, on January 22nd, will host a bill featuring three of the most authentically DIY bands currently based in Brooklyn: Guerrilla Toss, PC Worship, and Pill. Enjoy their noise below, and congrats to Todd P who persevered to make this dream of his a reality - we interviewed him about this (and other things) back in 2014.

"Exploratory band, solo project & collective" PC Worship plays Baby's All Right on May 28

Drawing from influences as diverse (but intimately connected) as Throbbing Gristle, Butthole Surfers and early Ween, PC Worship is a musical entity that despises - rather than simply defying - categorizing. They are so hostile to crystallized descriptions that they brand themselves as 'a band, solo project & collective of musicians [...] aesthetically uncommitted and exploratory." And even though almost every band on the planet has delusions about being that free, PC Worship actually kind of pulls it off (although they are clearly committed to noise and dissonance - and to being unpredictable). You can see them live at Baby's All Right on May 28. What to expect then? We are not sure about the number of musicians on stage, but music-wise: anything weird, although - luckily - not lacking some structure.

Naomi Punk's Heavy Hooks

Naomi Punk are some heavy dudes. On 'Television Man' a single note call and response between the guitars evolves into a chord and finally becomes a sentient riff when a jarring yet fancy rhythmic sweep in a 5/4 compound time turns up This Heat. In comes a monotone drawl describing a girl who "shaved her head off for fashion" as well as some other life changing events (still sung as a completely static line). Till suddenly the scab is torn off and the blood flows freely, giving way to a chorus so rewarding that we’re wondering if we even paid for it.

Best of CMJ 2014: NYC's PC Worship

From JP's report of day 1 of the CMJ Music Marathon 2014: "The PC Worship show (a band featuring members of Parquet Courts), was actually a solo performance: a dude sitting in a lawn chair, playing a tinny-sounding guitar, moaning out his heart. This lawn chair was positioned in the corner of the outside patio area at Silent Barn, and started pretty much immediately after Broken Water finished, so, especially in my mildly inebriated state, I wasn’t the quickest to get out there. But when I did stumble out there, what I saw was heartfelt, and meaningful and pretty. It might have seemed like filler to some (some people were actually heckling the dude, and I just couldn’t understand why, or how), but it was more important. To him, and to me—a guy alone at a show. The last song of his actually got stuck in my head. At least until Dream Police came on."
