Weekend Warrior, May 8 - 10

Hop Along’s lead singer/songwriter Frances Quinlan is not a fan of musical comparisons to her work. Rather, she, along with the rest of band - Mark Quinlan, Tyler Long, and Joe Reinhart, just usually don’t get them. That makes sense when you’re a group that is hard to narrow down into one genre. There’s punk there, but there’s emo, and folk, and even hardcore too. But what’s most memorable of all about Hop Along, as any fan could tell you, is Quinlan’s voice - a rasp of power and vulnerability. On their new album, Painted Shut, released earlier this week via Saddle Creek, she tells twisted tale after twisted tale with vocals that are raw, genuine and shatteringly beautiful. She has the strength to add depth to those sort of awkward encounters like running into an old friend while working at a restaurant. (Quinlan has worked as a server and house painter on and off between tours.) Hop Along has relayed a bit of nervousness about their latest creation with producer John Agnello, but Painted Shut is so pure that it’s sure to be loved by their growing fan base. They'll be joined this Saturday at Union Transfer by local pals Thin Lips, whom are currently on tour with them, and Clique. Debut Thin Lips EP Available for Streaming

New Track: "Nothing Weird" - Thin Lips

Found on their EP Divorce Year, which will be released on cassette on May 5 via Seagreen Records, Thin Lips' latest single, “Nothing Weird,” is jumpstarted by a momentous riff as Chrissy Tashijan depicts a definitive tale of a relationship ending. It’s a song that hits an emotional note, while occupying a tough POV as Tashijan pushes through the discord and moves forward. You can stream the track over at Stereogum. Thin Lips will be touring with Hop Along, making a stop on May 9 at Union Transfer.

Cool Points Staying True at Everybody Hits March 21

Cools Points have been staying true to their namesake, and gaining some for the past couple of years by playing badass basement shows and touring with the likes of Mumblr, Amanda X, and Bleeding Fractals. And the DIY outfit has also been gaining ears by playing fast-paced noise-punk anthems like Crucial Turds and Not Your Bro. Tonight's show at Everybody Hits will be business as usual for the hard-hitting four-piece. It will be headlined by shoegaze-y four-piece Ghost Gum, and will also feature the newest punk-pop project from Dangerous Ponies expats Chrissy Tashjian, Kyle Pulley, and Mike Tashjian, Thins Lips. Weekend Warrior, March 13 - 15

There are few (if any) shows in town that are going to be better this weekend than this Sunday’s bill at South Philly’s A House Named Virtue. Headlined by NYC transplants via Connecticut and New Jersey, Mannequin Pussy, the trio of Marissa Dabice (guitar/vocals), Thanasi Paul (guitar), and Kaleen Reading (drums), perform with such ferocity that you just can’t help but instantly become a fan. Well, that’s if you enjoy being obliterated by loud, aggressive punk; however, they also have the ability to create haunting, anthemic melodies that lie under their thick wall of noise. Ex-Dangerous Ponies’ Chrissy Tashjian, Kyle Pulley, and Mike Tashjian are back together again with Thin Lips, a project that holds on to the combination’s ability to write infectious pop hooks, while giving Pulley room to unleash his inner hardcore kid. Cousin Brian, with their new lineup, will be performing their first show since Halloween. Also joining the house party are Boston’s Ben Katzman’s Degreaser and Miami’s The Jellyfish Brothers.
