YIKES the ZERO

New YIKES the ZERO LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Doctor Molotov's Gallery of Portals, the third full-length album from YIKES the ZERO, is now available via Extra Lovely Records. The emcee weaves through a mysterious jazz backdrop. That chaotic, trippy clash of sound develops an ambiance that’s difficult to pin down, but intriguing to explore. Once in its midst, you’ll want to wander its depths for a while.

YIKES the ZERO Album Release Show at KFN Nov. 5

Celebrating his latest album, The Animal Box, released via local label Extra Lovely Records, YIKES the ZERO steps into a late evening affair at Kung Fu Necktie. Riding wide-ranging experimental beats that encompass electro, psych, jazz, etc., YIKES drops the gauntlet on the spectrum of hip hop, shifting between the drama of cinematic tones - the dial-tuning merger of juxtaposing genres and transmissions from another galaxy. A pair of local emcees (whom he collaborated with on the single “Gauntlet”) in the eloquent, white-hot experimentations of Raj Haldar, a.k.a. Lushlife (providing a DJ set), and like-minded labelmate Stainless Steele (whose album, Escapism, was produced by another of tonight’s performers Josh Hey) will be joining in the festivities. And crisscrossing between electro-folk-R&B among others, the upbeat vibes of Tamar Dart, a.k.a. Little Strike, will also aid in fortifying this late-burning night. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 11pm, $6, 21+ - Michael Colavita

Ghost Ghang Opening for Meyhem Lauren at KFN Aug. 9

This evening, the collaborative hip-hop assemblage known as Ghost Ghang, a.k.a. Hungry Ghosts, is part of a four-pronged billing at Kung Fu Necktie. The beauty in this situation is the group’s ability to hit on multiple fronts, lyrically weaving in and out of tight situations, while jumping on an array of beats that bridge the gaps from old school simplicity to a new age. There’s an underlying inherent intensity as (in this Olympic Summer) the baton of rhyme is passed from one to the another. Balancing chill, smooth-talking vibes with grimey, in-your-face tracks, they collectively reel you in to watch the practiced precision. A pair of local emcees in the steady-streaming, eclectic, experimention of YIKES the ZERO and the bull-mask-adorned combination of unbashed, poignant commentary with a humorous absurdist, Torito, will be there as well. There will also be a live taping of Fuck, That's Delicious with Queens emcee and show co-host Meyhem Lauren wrapping up this night of wordsmiths. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front., 8pm, $15, 21+ - Michael Colavita

New YIKES the ZERO EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

We had been told that YIKES the ZERO had a new album in the works, but after running into the local emcee/producer this past weekend, it seems like the release needs a bit of tweaking, and has been delayed. However, YIKES did just surprise us with Witches Brewskies & other lost tapes. Its a collection of unreleased material that was recorded during 2004 to 2012, and you can spin the tracks now for the first time below.

Dewey Decibel Opening for Kool A.D. at KFN May 3

Put your hands in the air, and let Sunday Funday take hold of you at Kung Fu Necktie with a crew of Philly rappers paving the way for headliner Kool A.D., formerly of alt hip-hop group Das Racist. On top of psychedelic 90’s hip-hop beats that hit a chill, sweet spot, South Philly emcee/producer/graphic artist Dewey Decibel, a.k.a. Dewey Sanders, relays his existential contemplations out loud on his latest EP Different Drum (World Around Records), produced by Zilla Rocca. The multi-talented Florida transplant also just dropped the 25th edition of his zine, “A Taste of the Invisible,” this past First Friday so grab yourself a copy. YIKES the ZERO, who collaborated on Lushlife's ten-minute opus "Toynbee Suite," and OHM x PLEASE will also be on hand to make the most out your weekend. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $13, 21+ - Emily DiCicco
