Fancy Pants Brings the Funk, New Album Out Soon

Fancy Pants is a band that’s a shot of youth-fueled creativity with a sound that dances across music genres- unrestricted, untethered, and in search of fun. Megan Scribner’s soaring vocals are powerful and seductive, and Travis Drew’s instrumentals bring funk-electro guitar chucking and chillwave synth melodies to the music that provide the backbone of Fancy Pants’ sound. The Austin-based dance-electro duo is set to release their first full-length release, Funk Paradise, in the next few weeks, and songs like the recently released “Come and take IT” indicate that these upstarts are on track to infect Austin with their dance party vibe.

Boston's Celebrity Look-Alikes play Middle East on 2/6

Back in September, Boston "psych dance-rock" quartet Celebrity Look-Alikes released its unabashedly mellow self-titled EP. Starting with the bass-zipped “Gargoyle” (streaming below), its loose yet controlled keys as chimerical as its titular beast, and ending with the swirling guitars of the existential musing “Revolving Door,” the effort shows a young, undeniably talented band searching for meaning while having fun along the way. Celebrity Look-Alikes play at Middle East in Cambridge MA on Saturday (2/6). – Zach Weg

Let it flow with Soft Bodies, see them live 01.30

The debut EP by Soft Bodies is a record in constant motion. Not motion like a freight train barreling down the line or an airplane dipping and diving through the clouds, but motion like something more organic and common to us all. It pulses, it waves, it flows, and when it skips a beat and jumps right for you, it’s both startling and beautiful. Though the tracks here range from laid back 90’s house fare (in the best way possible) to funky-as-it-gets, they move as smoothly from one to the next as they do from verse to chorus.

Catch Soft Bodies this Saturday (01.30) at Cafe Coco and pick up a free copy of the EP while you're there. -Austin Phy
