Bill Waters celebrates EP release at Trans-Pecos on 04.30

Bill Waters may not spend much time on social media promoting his music, but that may be because his songs speak for themselves. Waters' 2017 dreamy retro-pop EP Humid is laced with a heavy dose of laid-back guitar tunes, splendid drum fills, and mellow verses that seamlessly transition into reverb-drenched choruses. His second entry, Honey Hi appears to follow the same formula, and yet expands the palette of baroque pop that characterized the early Last Shadow Puppets super-group, adding a touch of the chillwave of bands like Washed Out. While you won’t find much info on the new album, Bill Waters does have an album release show at Trans-Pecos in Brooklyn on April 30th. Check out his song “It's True” from Honey Hi below. - Rene Cobar

New Mike Space Album Available for Streaming & Download

Mike Whalen, a.k.a. Mike Space, recently shared a new album Mike Gets Dark, which also features contributions from Justin Roth (Soft Idiot). There’s a delicate, finding-comfort-in-loneliness aspect to the recordings. Balancing bleakness with hopeful bright glimpses, these songs blend catchiness with an ear toward experimentation. "It's an album about the means by which we seclude ourselves, and how those same means can bring us back together with the people we love."

New Track: "Above" - Makeup Tutorial

Hushed vocals whisper through the gentle, gliding tempo of “Above,” the debut single from Makeup Tutorial. That fragile, intimate foundation is contrasted by the overriding threat of fuzz that lingers on the periphery. A hypnotic, noisy gust kicks up as the track shifts from an unassuming to all consuming auditory experience. It's a promising introduction to the fledgling, lo-fi project.

New Track: "Urgent Need to Leave" - Lightninging

Slick, far-reaching guitar lines, reinforced by splatterings of drums, create a sense of tension in motion on “Urgent Need to Leave,” courtesy of Philly four-piece Lightninging. The warmth of vocal harmony is countered by the sadness of a desire to depart. A controlled, combative, instrumental outpouring serves as scene-setting, mood-mimicking transitions. Channeling those feelings into fiery, doubled up, guitar bursts, the heaviness of the moment plays out in a melancholy manner.

Naytronix Releases “Come Back” off new LP

Nate Brenner, aka Naytronix, just released the single “Come Back” off his forthcoming album, Air, and it’s a fantastically mixed, warm and pleasing jam that pushes the limits of psych pop. The percussive backbone is blessed with drummer Hamir Atwal’s hard-to-mimic snappy jazz touch. The album features some other Oakland favorites, including Madeline Kenney and Tune-Yards’ Merrill Garbus. After his work scoring Sorry to Bother You, we're not supprirsed. “Come Back” is a killer teaser and we can’t wait for the full album, out June 7th on Botcave records. - Michelle Kicherer, Associate Editor
