Wax Idols, TV Ghost, Lorelei @ Beats-DC, Mon. 4/29

It seems odd that the four-piece Wax Idols reside in Oakland, California. Especially considering the fact that the band’s sophomore LP Discipline & Desire embodies a dark, full, twisted sound: something that feels more appropriate to the foggy, damp British climate. Heather Fortune and band dedicated themselves to this record for over a year. Stretching beyond the comfort of unassuming hooks and into a darker, new wave territory. Mark Burgess (of the British outfit The Chameleons) worked alongside Wax Idols and engineer Monte Vallier as an extra pair of ears. Together they've crafted an album that's sleek and focused without being slick, and dark and intense without being at all humorless. This is an inventive record which solidifies the fact that Fortune is one of the best songwriters hiding in the shadows of the other California — where the sun doesn't always shine. Tour mates TV Ghost join Monday's bill at Beats along with DC Slumberland veterans Lorelei opening. $10. 1219 9th Street NW Washington DC 20001 http://www.hugefan.com/experiences/slumberland-records-showcase-with-wax-idols-tv-ghost

Dead Professional's Naked Pop

Audio: Don't Be Cruel (MP4, 5.51mb) Download Now

By: Dead Professional Website

“I’ve got nothing to hide behind” goes the opening line of one of Dead Professional’s wry, Nick Lowe-esque alt-pop songs. And indeed what you hear is what you get throughout all of this VA-based one-man band’s work. The soulful vocals and old-school simplicity of the songwriting are boldly underlined by brutally stark arrangements (usually just vocals, guitar and a simple drum machine). But while the songs may be short and the arrangements lean, they can pack a surprising emotional punch. Dead Professional will be at Iota in Arlington on Thursday April 25th.

Dead Professional strips pop down to the bone

If perfection is achieved when there is nothing left to take away, Dead Professional must be getting pretty close by now. --With just a cheapo vintage guitar, some rudimentary drum loops and vocal processing pedals, Dead Professional emphasizes minimalism and emotional immediacy with rye and raw pop songs, elemental rock and roll riffs and brutally simple beats. --John Harouff, the Virginia-based singer songwriter behind Dead Professional must not be a team player. Starting out years ago in the already minimal trio The Union of a Man and a Woman (Jagjaguwar) he eventually wound up as the driving force behind the even further stripped-down duo The Cinnamon Band. Now he seems to have finally fulfilled his destiny to be a solitary one-man band. But you wouldn’t necessarily notice the lack of manpower just by listening... --Dead Professional will be playing with DC favs GEMS and Brooklyn's Ex Cops at Rock and Roll Hotel, Wednesday March 6th.
